Wind Machines

  • Do not operate wind machines if wind speeds are much higher than 7 km/h as there is unlikely to be a strong temperature inversion or warmer air above the field anyway.
  • Do not operate wind machines if wind speeds are 13 km/h or higher, as this can damage their long, thin blades.
  • Never operate wind machines if wind speeds are 21 km/h or higher, as this can seriously damage them.

Overhead Irrigation

  • Must be started before the temperature reaches freezing, if running, start above 1 degree C.
  • Must stay on until temperatures return to above freezing
  • Wind can result in worse frost damage than if we had done nothing, if winds are likely to get above 20 km/hour through the freezing event we probably should not turn on the irrigation system.
  • If freezing event is past 12 hours we probably should not irrigate as the ponds may run out of water and ice buildup could cause extensive damage
